Nik Turner - Sphynx (1993)

This record holds a unique place in Turner’s discography, as it represents a completely re-recorded and updated reimagining of his 1978 debut solo album, Xitintoday. The album’s concept is deeply rooted in Egyptian mythology and the Egyptian Book of the Dead. The original material from the 1970s came into being after Turner visited Egypt and recorded flute improvisations from within the chambers of the Great Pyramid of Giza. For the 1993 version, the music was given a contemporary (for that time) interpretation, drawing on space rock, ambient, and experimental electronic genres.
The album features contributions from notable figures in the underground psychedelic scene, including guitarist Helios Creed (of the band Chrome) and Tommy Grenas.
