Fantasie Impromptu in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 66

“These scherzos are quite diverse and have such varied characters that they are almost never performed as complete sets in live concerts (except by Pletnev in his 2-CD concert at Carnegie Hall, but his interpretation of the four Scherzos—which sounds more like Pletnev than Chopin—is unlikely to satisfy many listeners in the long run!), but generally speaking, the two most nationalistic ones—No. 1 and No. 3—appear in all Chopin concerts and demonstrate both emotional depth and virtuosity. They are great works. It is therefore a pleasure to have all four recorded here, interspersed with the generally more fleeting and dreamy Impromptus. It works well, and Deyanova is a Bulgarian pianist who can turn it on when needed, yet possesses a sensitivity and a complete understanding of Chopin in fantasy mode. All of these works are well-crafted and well-played. The final word might perhaps go to Pollini (the complete Scherzos) or Michelangeli (unfortunately only No. 2) in terms of finesse and virtuosity, but overall, Deyanova holds her own against any other pianist in these works—and I emphasize “overall,” since those seeking the precise technical skill of, say, a Pollini might feel shortchanged, but I’m referring to tension and verve. The acclaimed Diapson Prize-winning recording by Polish pianist Lidia Grychtolowna on the Muza label, part of her complete works series (with which they rightly reclaimed the composer as part of their national heritage in the 1960s through these outstanding recordings of first-class sound and first-class performance) was remastered on CD in 1995 but is hard to find—try looking on eBay. This CD also includes the Impromptus, but they are grouped separately from the Scherzos. Despite its age, it is preferable to recordings by Pollini or Pogorelich. But the breathtaking pianism (Grychtolowna was a student of Michelangeli), which interprets each scherzo with meticulous care, lacks that final degree of thrill and tension that comes so naturally to Deyanova and bursts forth here. Therefore, for me, the Polish pianist offers clarity, technique, and authenticity, but falls short of Deyanova in terms of musicality. I really recommend that you seek this out, because your judgment might be exactly the opposite of mine—and that’s wonderful. The recorded sound definitely has a life of its own! The lower octaves of the instrument are captured with vitality, while the overall sound is warm and natural. There’s none of the exaggerated acoustics that sometimes distract on one Nimbus recording or another—perhaps most noticeably on Alan Marks’s Liszt recitals, which are equally desirable (because of the playing). I found the sound much more immediate and interesting than that of Pogorelich or Pollini on DG. There’s none of the retouched perfection of their recordings, but this Nimbus release will give you more of the music, and I suspect it reflects Chopin’s intentions and spirit much more faithfully. If you want to hear Chopin’s music played with heart and flair in a very well-balanced program, this CD will bring you much joy and pleasure. Highly recommended.”—David</turbo:content>

The small repertoire of works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Schumann, and Dvorák shows that this was a genre of limited interest, considerable frustration, and mixed results. Mozart's two piano quartets, however, are held as exemplars, for his solutions to the ensemble's unique problems of balance and cohesion are convincing and elegant. The players' roles shift constantly, each taking turns as the dominant part; the counterpoint is consistent and inventive, always maintaining a tension that interlocks the trio with the piano; and the pieces are as strongly characterized and richly developed as any of Mozart's other great chamber works. The Mozartean Players perform on pianoforte and period string instruments, and their tuning is a little lower than one hears on modern instruments. However, this lends warmth to the Piano Quartet No. 2 in E flat and a deeper sense of pathos to the Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor. Both pieces are skillfully played, with a conversational tone appropriate to Mozart's intentions. Classical Express provides exceptional sound and the budget price is hard to beat.
</turbo:content>

Hamrun (Live)
07. Lainey My Dear (Live)
08. Wynstones (Live)

The Jazz Years collects together previously unissued live quartet recordings by bassist Daryl Runswick made between 1970 and 1978, together with a solo track from 1967. The bands feature some of the most well known names in British jazz, such as saxophonists Don Rendell, Stan Sulzmann, and Alan Skidmore, pianist Mick Pyne, and drummer Spike Wells. It might be easy to consider The Jazz Years as a historic document, but the music – mostly composed by Runswick – stands on its own terms, too.

Runswick was clearly a fine bass player and composer. Starkers is a fast romp, Runswick’s bass walking at top speed behind a sparking soprano solo from Rendell. Lainey’s Tune, from the same 1973 session for the Darryl Runswick Quartet, is a slower, more thoughtful number.

The earliest group session, the London Jazz Four from 1970, features two covers of pop songs from the era. MacArthur Park starts as a fairly standard exposition (as standard as a bonkers song about about baking can be) but develops into something much more interesting as Mike McNaught‘s slow piano solo explodes into a fast post bop workout.

The 1974 and ’75 sessions of the Darryl Runswick Quartet featuring Sulzmann and Tony Rymas on piano with Wells (74) or Harold Fisher (75) on drums yield some fine tracks. Sulzmann’s Anagram balances a jaunty rhythm with long notes on his saxophone, before he launches into a fiery sax solo. Skreepin’, by Hymas, features Sulzmann on soprano. Alan Skidmore is captured in full on Coltranesque form on Runswick’s Hamrun, together with a powerful solo from Mick Pyne on piano.

Aside from the quality of the playing, the one constant throughout is of course Runswick. His bass playing is eloquent and articulate; his solos are engaging, pulling one in and making one listen. His writing, mostly mid paced post bop with nods to jazz-rock on some pieces together with some lovely ballads, is similarly appealing. The two CD set is bookended by two versions of Wyntones The first features Rendell on flute from 1973; it feels exploratory, a tune finding its feet. The second is from the 1978 session with Skidmore and Pyne and is much more self assured, the musicians bringing a sense of maturity, in particular evident in Runswick’s bass solo.</turbo:content>

Pad maelti min modir - Mother Says (Icelandic Folk-Song)

While 26 years old at the time of this recording, Jóel Pálsson proves himself an impressive talent in possession of a fully developed sound and conception on the saxophone; strong, versatile writing skills; and a leader's knack for surrounding himself with musical partners that complement his playing and writing. Recorded in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1998, Prím features Iceland's top contemporary jazz players, exploring nine of the leader's originals and one number based on an Icelandic folk song. Among the fine collaborators heard with Pálsson, guitarist Hilmar Jensson is a standout. His Ed Bickert-meets-John Abercrombie style ranges effectively from dry, single-note lines to nuanced feedback, volume swells, and bowed tones. Pálsson's most appealing work is in a relatively straight-ahead, quietly adventurous, contemporary post-bop vein, such as the kinetic, pulsing Snug, where the interplay between Pálsson and pianist Eythor Gunnarsson recalls dialogues Dewey Redman held with Keith Jarrett in Jarrett's bands of the 1970s. Pálsson also writes engaging, atmospheric works in a sort of ECM style that avoids the tendency of some of that label's releases to go soft in the middle. One such track, Second Thoughts, features the bass clarinet of Sigurdur Flosason, whose gentle, swooping sound borrows effectively from Bennie Maupin's work with Herbie Hancock. Less interesting are the two tracks that double up on drummers, with Matthias Hemstock taking up residence in the right speaker and regular drummer Einar Scheving the left. While a similar setup has worked well for the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead, for Pálsson's music the twin traps' wall of wallop is used at the expense of subtlety and suppleness. Of course, a 26-year-old has every right to occasional moments of funky exuberance, but the fact is that Pálsson's gifts are better served without an overbearing backbeat.</turbo:content>
