The London band The Fantastics! was born in 2003. Organist and pianist Greg Boraman left the esteemed deep funk outfit The Soul Destroyers (Jazzman Records) and took the keyboard seat in Reverend Cleatus & The Soul Saviours. Under that name the group released its debut album 2LBs Of Funk on the French label Soul Cookers Records. The musicians adored heavy funk, but they wanted to combine it with everything that had shaped their tastes: jazz, Brazilian music, afrobeat, rhythm & blues, rock, boogie, latin and reggae. The purely retro-funk framework soon became too narrow, and the group changed its name to The Fantastics!. They returned with the aggressive funk-rock single Cheeba’s Couch (Raw Wax), which announced their intent to widen the sonic palette.
The band was signed by Freestyle Records founder Adrian Gibson. The debut released on that label, Mighty Righteous, was warmly received by Wax Poetics magazine, legendary DJ Bob Jones and Mark Lamarr of BBC Radio 2, who twice invited the musicians to perform live sessions on his show God’s Jukebox. In 2011 came the second album, All The People, which continues that path. On several tracks it features Sulene Fleming, one of the most versatile British vocalists of her generation. Notable compositions include Somewhere Finally, a summery love song with deep soul, horn hooks and Sulene’s soaring vocals, and the moody, atmospheric Know No Gods. There are also Cold Case, with a southern blues-tinged groove, and the strident funk-rock of I Breath. Altogether it is an eclectic sound that respects the past without being shackled to it, the destination the group has been heading toward all these years.
