An obscure Chicago group from the early 1980s recorded an independent soul album that carries the sparkle and warmth of Earth Wind & Fire’s best work of the mid-1970s. The music is polished yet never slick: soul, jazz, and melodic grace are balanced just as on the strongest EWF records. For an album of the early 80s it is unusually warm, and the playing is focused and professional — a quality rare among independent soul releases of that era. The record holds up from first track to last; key tracks include the instrumental groover “Jewel’s Groove,” “Rhythms Of Hope,” “Song Of Life,” “Gotta Make It Better,” and “Soon You’ll See The Way.” The group could easily have become huge, but remained in the shadows.
