The British band The Fantastics! was born in 2003, when organist, writer and broadcaster Greg Boraman, known for his devotion to the Hammond organ, left the deep funk outfit The Soul Destroyers (Jazzman Records). After an on-air appeal on Craig Charles’s show on BBC 6 Music, he took the organist’s seat in Reverend Cleatus & The Soul Saviours. A run of high-energy gigs and several successful 45s, among them “The Slip”, a favourite of DJ Format, led to the debut album “2Lbs of Funk” (Soul Cookers Records), which earned four stars in Mojo magazine.
In time the musicians felt that the rigid genre boundaries of the scene fitted them like a straitjacket rather than a well-cut suit. The band changed its name to The Fantastics! and returned with the aggressive funk single “Cheeba’s Couch” (Raw Wax), which signalled an intent to widen its palette and influences. The next album, “Mighty Righteous”, looks backwards, forwards and sideways at once. It features searing soul vocals, grand piano, double bass, African thumb piano and dub effects. There is also the furious punk-funk track “Soul Sucka!”, on which the Hammond is attacked in a frustrated rage. The album refuses to faithfully recreate any particular era of soul, funk or jazz and lets each song evolve naturally. It runs from a Hammond groove in the vein of Jimmy McGriff on the title track to the filmic, genre-defying “Blue Sunday”. Two tracks recorded with UK soul legend Noel McKoy add a contemporary R&B feel. The result is a record that rips up the rule book and blends five decades of dance-floor influences. According to DJ Format, the album is worth buying and the band must be seen live.
