Ninja Man (born Desmond Ballentine in Annotto Bay) is one of the most recognisable and feared deejays in Jamaican dancehall. His trademarks are fierce lyrics, a confrontational attitude, dramatic pauses, a stuttering delivery and sharp verbal attacks. The self-proclaimed “Don Gorgon” moved to Kingston at eleven and began his career with the Black Culture Sound System under the name Double Ugly. In 1980 he joined Killamanjaro, performing alongside Super Cat and Early B. After recording as Uglyman, he settled on the name Ninja Man. The turning point came in 1987, when his self-produced combination with singer Courtney Melody, “Protection”, opened the door to the island’s leading producers: King Jammy, Bobby Digital, Redman, Philip “Fatis” Burrell and Steely & Clevie. He reportedly preferred to invent his lyrics on the spot in the studio, which is why his performances sound like a direct challenge to someone standing in front of him.
The album Warning You Now was released in 1990 and is now available digitally through VP Records. Produced by King Jammy, its nine tracks ride heavyweight digital riddims. The standout is “Border Clash”, built on the much-versioned “Punnany” riddim, which still works as a proven crowd-pleaser. “Come A The Church” uses Jammy’s digital version of the “Vanity” (aka “I’m Just A Guy”) riddim, while “Nice Up The Lawn” sits on the contrasting, instantly recognisable “Far East” riddim. The gun talk and confrontation won’t appeal to everyone, but his music is more than threats: it rests on impeccable timing, vocal tricks, humour and an instinct for riding a riddim. This is raw digital dancehall from an era when deejays battled for supremacy and personality mattered as much as lyrical skill — a solid reminder of why Ninja Man became a dominant figure in the genre.
