European roots reggae specialists — the project Lone Ark and the band The 18th Parallel — have recorded another joint album, "Showcase Vol. 2". It arrives five years after their critically well-received debut "Showcase Vol. 1" (2021). The material was recorded on 2-inch magnetic tape in two locations: Geneva, Switzerland, and Cueto, Spain.
The sound deliberately returns to Jamaican reggae of the 1970s and 1980s: heavy drums and bass, a tight rhythm section, carefully crafted horn, flute and synthesizer parts, and layered vocal arrangements. Lone Ark vocalist Roberto Sánchez addresses pressing subjects: the role of music in activism ("Ammunition"), the senselessness of wars justified by religion ("Man Kill Man"), criticism of capitalism ("Money"), and gratitude for life's simple blessings ("Morning Blessing").
The album contains six songs and their six dub versions, mixed by Sánchez himself. The release is pointedly set against the age of artificial intelligence: it relies on live playing, analogue warmth, and fully organic roots music with no studio tricks.
