Jamaican vocalist Junior Kelly is back with a new album, Care About Me, almost three years after Rasta Should Be Deeper. The 10-track record is produced by his longtime collaborator Anthony Senior, whose label Al.Ta.Fa.An. Records released Kelly songs such as Receive (Tsahai riddim), Creator (Kiana riddim) and Working So Hard (Senior riddim) back in the 2000s. In 2013 they had already worked together on the singer’s tenth studio album, Piece Of The Pie, where the roots reggae was played largely by the Firehouse Crew.
The new album stays on territory familiar to Kelly: conscious messages, spiritual reflections, social concerns and a sizeable share of love songs. His recognizable voice keeps its fire, and live-played riddims give the material a natural roots feel. Four duets feature Jah Eyes, Aimann Raad, Blessed (a Jamaican-Canadian reggae artist and two-time Juno Award winner) and Ras Kuda. Kelly’s commitment is beyond doubt, but the quality of the songs is uneven.
The socially and spiritually minded numbers work best. Beginning Of Wisdom opens the album with a strong message, Take From The Poor with Jah Eyes is a heavyweight conscious tune that deserves repeated spins, Powerful with Aimann Raad convinces through its spiritual content, and Children Are The Future with Blessed is one of the fiercest and most essential tracks. Relax with Ras Kuda rides a riddim that sounds familiar, and the closing Mi Chalice and That Empress again deliver. The love songs are weaker: Hurt So Bad and the title track Care About Me fail to connect, while Make You Happy shows that Kelly can handle romantic material when the song is right.
Overall the album is a mixed bag, but its strengths justify attention: when Kelly turns to social issues and conscious roots reggae, he sounds right at home. Beginning Of Wisdom, Take From The Poor and Children Are The Future are the main reasons to listen.
