American singer-songwriter Pete Francis recorded the album Homemade at home, at Dragoncrest Studio in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, the place where he once learned to play guitar, recorded his first song on a cassette recorder, and dreamed of making records of his own with the booklet of Pearl Jam’s Ten hanging on his wall. Returning years later feels to him like completing a circle. The title song and its video show where everything began and at the same time celebrate what he has built since: his family, his music and a creative life that is still unfolding. For Francis the word “homemade” is beautifully imperfect: it means something made by hand, with love and care, rather than polished beyond recognition. That spirit became central to the record, made among the people, memories and everyday moments that shaped him. The album’s central idea is that home has remained at the heart of his music all along.
The producers were Mikey Bar-Lavi (also the engineer, guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist) and Francis himself (vocals, guitar, piano). Mixing was done by Scotty Jacoby at Eusonia Studios and mastering by Robby Robinson at Ghost Mastering. The musicians include drummers Kenny Shaw and Zach Bowen, bassists Bobby Pawlings and Chris Anderson, Ben Higginbotham (vocals, piano, Wurlitzer, mellotron), Katie Heimbold (vocals), Boo Reiners (guitar, mandolin, lap steel, banjo), guitarist Adam November, Ty Bailie (B3 organ, Farfisa, mellotron), a horn section of Craig Dreyer (saxophone), Reggie Pittman (trumpet) and Neil Pawley (trombone), and strings by Zeno Pittarelli (cello) and Emily Garcia (violin).
