“On Elephant Hill,” the debut album of Los Angeles project Big Trouble, is the result of years of work by multi-instrumentalist Justin Kohlberg (Moonrun) and singer-guitarist Daniel Talamantes, who met at a video shoot in 2016 and gradually turned their jam sessions into a full body of material. It was recorded in Kohlberg’s home studio, The Greenhouse; Adrian Olsen handled the mixing and Jack Doutt the mastering, with friends of the duo contributing: Joe Kaplow, Kelly Koval, Andy Page and David Allred.
The music blends indie rock, folk and soul with studio experimentation; its inspirations include Kate Bush, Juan Gabriel and Paul McCartney, and the sound recalls Talk Talk, Brian Eno and Broken Social Scene. The lyrics draw on Jung, Yeats and Ricardo Flores Magón and reflect Talamantes’s environmental and social-justice activism. “Mel,” inspired by Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree, addresses the cost of giving in activism and the risk of self-erasure; “Dange,” in a 1970s soul vein, recounts the ICE raids in Los Angeles in June 2025; “Signal” satirizes everyday denial and cognitive dissonance in American society through a checked-out suburban man. The album is released on September 18, 2026 by Royal Oakie Records for digital download and streaming.
