John Goldrust, a British songwriter and producer from Oxford, has spent years working in the shadows of the UK independent scene. He calls himself not an "underground musician" but an "Underworld Magician." In his telling, while major labels scrambled to anticipate the next big wave, he was the one with a Zippo lighter, igniting movements in Indie Rock, Electronic Dance and Reggae. He jokes that The Prodigy's "Firestarter" could have been written about him. Operating mostly outside London, he cross-pollinated the Oxford, Bristol, Manchester, Edinburgh and Brighton scenes. He formed bands, collaborated and performed solo. Several projects he helped launch have lasted over 20 years, yet he says he rarely receives credit for them on paper.

For years he tried and failed to record a high-quality demo to promote himself. His songs were recorded in studios and hi-tech music shops around the country. There they were played for months to hundreds of aspiring musicians as demonstrations of the businesses' own products, while he remained without a usable demo. He decided to produce his songs independently and spent the last 10 years honing his recording and production skills in his own studio.

The result is the album "Like A Phoenix" (a.k.a. "Songs Of Experience"), out on 2 October 2026. It is his first release since the EP "Travellers In Timing". It was recorded over ten years, and most of the songs were written during that time. They document love, loss, relationships and the search for meaning along the rocky path of an independent artist seeking a record deal. Its themes are what it means to be human in the modern world, the battle of good versus evil, the search for a modern-day "Holy Grail," spiritual awakening and personal emancipation. Mastering took six weeks of constant work with one of the UK's top mastering engineers. The aim was to preserve the organic character of Goldrust's recording and mixing while meeting industry standards. He criticizes those standards as increasingly synthetic, robotic and soulless.

The partner album "The Blue Album" (a.k.a. "Songs Of Innocence") is released at the same time. It was recorded in the preceding ten years and presents Goldrust's live Singer-Songwriter performances. They were never officially released, partly because of personal trials in that period. The two albums form a diptych of innocence and experience. Listened to together, they are meant to open a door to a timeless reality.
