Nive Nielsen, The Deer Children - My Mother's Name (2026)

Nive Nielsen, The Deer Children - My Mother's Name (2026)
Greenlandic singer-songwriter Nive Nielsen, born into the indigenous Inuk population of Greenland and deliberately never settling anywhere for long, has released My Mother’s Name with The Deer Children: her first album in ten years and her third full-length. Besides music, she has been a band leader, a film and theatre actress, and a participant in art projects that highlight the plight of indigenous peoples. The title track opens with the line “I don’t plan, and I don’t plan to stop”, which reads like a manifesto of her itinerant life.

The music is deliberately unfocused and sits in the grey zone between folk, pop and the songwriter schools of composition, sometimes blending all of them within a single song. The record carries an uneasy tension, a feeling that something is wrong and needs to be called out, and it rewards repeat listening. The title track is a layered, propulsive opener in which an uneasy slide guitar cuts through marching percussion, and a confident vocal argues with music that refuses to endorse it. In “Time To Time”, synths bubble over a barely audible click track, and the refrain “Save yourself, from time to time” turns from a warning into a plea. “Paint” begins like a lost Crowded House B-side and unfolds with a howling guitar line and a sticky vibraphone melody in the coda.

Throughout the album, small episodes of ambience and anti-melody weave in and out of each song’s core like radio emissions gone haywire: pedal steel and synth glitches in “Low” (whose melody resembles a slow, folkier cousin of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”), mellotron in the acoustic “Wild”, and disturbing percussion and cello scraping in “Blame”. These details make every song a pleasure to explore, while The Deer Children handle the eclectic instrumentation and quirky rhythms with ease: Nielsen is the focus, but this is a real band. “Nuna Pii” is sung in Greenlandic over a slow tread rhythm and plucked notes, and the closer “Up All Night”, with its military rhythm, simple hook, ambience, cello and muted saxophone, lifts the mood, though it is far from the revelry of AC/DC. The album is a studied, determined and often beautiful attempt to construct meaning out of the chaos of modern life.
