San Francisco-based musician Christian Molenaar, known for difficult, noisy and unpredictable music, has released Jeremiah XVII, eleven tracks that for him amount to a pop album. Theremins and reggaeton rhythms collide with downcast country, apocalyptic folk, feedback-drenched soul, bedroom pop with steel guitar, and fairground field recordings. The record builds on the sound of February’s Musacea Equinox, where chamber prog, post-punk, math metal and country met in joyful genre chaos. The new album instead traces a mosaic of doomed relationships. For it, Molenaar built his own instruments: optical theremins, homebrew synthesizers, hand-wired contact mics and bespoke fuzz pedals. “I needed to get further inside the sound to really inhabit the process,” he says. Despite the squalling feedback and distorted vocals, the songwriting remains the main strength: the most confessional lyrics yet from a writer known for ruthless self-scrutiny, with callbacks to William Gaddis, Roberto Bolaño and Czesław Miłosz. Sadness, anger and a lifetime of disappointments are transmuted into his catchiest and most affecting material, making this his most stripped-down and personal album. A reviewer at Idioteq notes the jazz, soul, gentle chillout-like passages, touches of classical music and lovely country guitar, along with unexpected rhythms and misbehaving electronics.
