Irish tenor Josef Locke (born Joseph McLaughlin) from Derry rose to become one of the most prominent stars of the music hall and variety theatre stages in the mid-20th century. The turning point in his career came in 1947 when his recording of "Hear My Song, Violetta" brought him massive popularity. Possessing a colorful stage presence and a fine vocal technique, Locke deliberately chose not to pursue an opera career, instead winning over millions through his renditions of sentimental ballads, operetta highlights, Irish traditional numbers, Italian songs, and religious songs.
A dispute with tax authorities forced the artist to temporarily flee the country and pause his performing career. However, the early 1990s brought an unexpected career resurgence: the 1992 film Hear My Song, loosely based on his life story, reignited public interest and launched his album into the Top Ten pop charts. His musical legacy endures through a broad repertoire that spans classic Irish standards ("Galway Bay", "The Rose Of Tralee") alongside world-renowned sacred and Italian classics ("Ave Maria", "Santa Lucia").
