Marina Herlop - Dja Dja (2026) [Hi-Res]

BAND/ARTIST: Marina Herlop

Catalan singer and producer Marina Herlop releases the album Dja Dja, in which she emerges as a producer and sound designer, making full use of the open-ended possibilities of the DAW. Her well-trained voice is still at the center, but it is now surrounded by skittering beats, fantastical brass fanfares and alien chorals. The sound was shaped by a creative exchange with Zora Jones: after moving back to Barcelona, Jones shared an apartment with Herlop for a while and took piano lessons from her. In turn, Jones’ signature marching drums, orchestral hits and glassy FM synths have noticeably raised the level of Herlop’s production. The album has an effortless quality: already on As meigas, the voice turns into gargles, sputters and whispers over gently skittering music box chimes. Herlop conceived the record as a single entity, meant to be heard from beginning to end. By Siete mares it grows into a brash, beat-heavy collage of Catalan calls and bizarre instrumental snippets. Comparisons to Björk, which have followed the artist from the start, hardly apply here: she takes ever bigger risks with her voice, asserts her heritage and clearly enjoys the process. On Los dos lobos, knife-sharpening foley hits, log drums and gun-cock sounds convey a musician loosening her belt and cracking her knuckles.
