Foxwarren member Darryl Kissick has released a solo instrumental record titled Character Actor, created as a response to existential dread and physical hardship. Amid destructive wildfires in Saskatchewan and broader global turbulence, the musician suffered a severe hockey injury that left him bedridden for six weeks following surgery. Coping with sleep deprivation and chronic pain, Kissick began composing deeply meditative music, setting aside traditional lyrics and vocal melodies in favor of immersive atmospheric soundscapes.
The record weaves together ambient, experimental folk, and minimalism, blending acoustic guitars and pedal steel with tape-warped textures and quiet cinematic arrangements. Kissick completed the album alongside his brother Avery Kissick, musicians Jakob Bjornson and Ian Cameron, while his sister Emily Hamilton designed the artwork depicting a skull superimposed on a clear sky. The album serves as a poignant exploration of fragility, contrasting peaceful passages with abrasive sonic interruptions.
