British multi-instrumentalist Secondson and veteran pedal steel innovator BJ Cole have collaborated on the album There is Wonder Here, released on vinyl and CD via Centripetal Force and on cassette via Geology Records. The project delivers an unusual sonic pairing, merging the fluid voice of the pedal steel guitar with the haunting resonance of the Cristal Baschet—a rare acoustic instrument invented in 1952 by French brothers Bernard and François Baschet, played by rubbing wet fingertips across glass rods.
The album developed from a long-distance exchange, beginning with the track If Black Was a Colour, before transitioning into studio sessions driven by spontaneous improvisation. Recorded with sound engineer Thomas V. Westgard and mixed/mastered by producer Chuck Johnson, the production relied on acoustic contrast: Cole's pedal steel was captured in a dry space to maintain physical clarity, whereas the Cristal Baschet was tracked in reflective rooms utilizing accelerometers, vintage amplifiers, and rotating speakers. Featuring additional string quartet and Orchestron arrangements on Mòr Du, the record bridges minimalism, sound art, ambient, and contemporary composition, grounding textural sound exploration back into structured song forms.
