In 1983, in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, American musicians Mel Eberle and Steve Jones formed the duo The Arms of Someone New. Drawing inspiration from The Beatles, psychedelia, the melancholic mid-80s sound of Factory Records, and The Cure's album Faith, the duo created a distinct style blending guitar-driven new wave, synth-pop, and dream pop. Utilizing a modest setup of basic synths, a Roland TR-707 drum machine, and reverb-drenched guitars, the group recorded austere, poetic, and atmospheric music.
Following their debut record SUSAN SLEEPWALKING (1985), released on their own Office Records imprint (and later reissued by Projekt), the duo recorded their landmark album LOVE, POWER & JUSTICE in 1986. The recording featured contributions from guitarist Henry Frayne and vocalist Lynn Canfield, who would later form the dream pop act Area (and subsequently Lanterna and The Moon Seven Times). The record became a standout highlight of the American indie underground and college radio scene, offering listeners a delicate, melancholic sound free from the typical aggression and bombast of the 1980s.
Four decades later, a 40th-anniversary reissue of LOVE, POWER & JUSTICE presents remixed and remastered audio from the original tapes, along with archival 4-track demos and alternate versions, highlighting the timeless quality of cassette culture and mid-80s independent music.
