In the late 1980s, Japanese musician and self-styled "magician" Shiho pursued an unusual synthesis of sound, science, and spiritual practice. Following her landmark album "The Body Is a Message of the Universe," she recorded material between 1989 and 1990 that would become the compilation "Alpha Wave Music," reissued here for the first time. These recordings are built around experiments with binaural rhythms and so-called "alpha waves" — sound patterns designed to sync the listener's brainwaves with a state of deep relaxation. The sonic architecture rests on the principle of 1/f fluctuation, better known as pink noise: a type of sound signal with a balanced, "natural" frequency distribution that is subjectively perceived as soothing and organic, unlike harsh white noise. Shiho fused this acoustic science with color theory, structuring her compositions as a kind of sonic landscape in which shifting synthesizer timbres correspond to shifting color states. Musically, the album is built on flowing, floating synthesizer textures — exotic, shimmering, free of sharp edges — creating a sense of weightlessness and a slowly changing space. The music's purpose isn't entertainment but function: it's conceived as a tool for physical and mental well-being, a way to bring body and mind into a state of deep calm through sound.
