British-American composer Claudia Sarne wrote the original score for DC Studios' Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Jason Momoa. With this work, Sarne became the first woman to score a feature film in the DC cinematic universe. The score blends dirty synth bass lines, sweeping orchestral themes, and mournful solo piano passages, mirroring the characters' emotional states — from Ruthye's heartbreak to Lobo's nihilism.
Sarne's path into film music began unexpectedly. Raised in London to British parents, she studied piano from an early age with pianist Carola Grindea and, as a teenager, threw herself into songwriting and electronic music within London's underground scene, signing a songwriting deal with Warner Chappell. In the mid-1990s she met Atticus Ross, with whom she formed the band 12 Rounds, signing first to Polydor Records and later to Trent Reznor's Nothing Records imprint under Interscope Records; the band relocated to the US in the early 2000s. A copy of 12 Rounds' music reaching director Allen Hughes opened the door to film scoring: alongside Atticus and Leopold Ross, Sarne scored the series Touching Evil, then Hughes' The Book of Eli, launching a long-running career.
Since then, Sarne has contributed to projects including the series Black Mirror, Outcast, and Dear Mama, the documentary Love + War, and films Earthquake Bird, Broken City, and Triple 9. In recent years she has increasingly worked as a solo composer — notably on Apple TV+'s Shining Girls — paving the way for independent projects like Supergirl. Her musical sensibility is rooted in electronic music while drawing on classical training and an eclectic upbringing, from Nina Simone and David Bowie to Kraftwerk, reggae, and hip-hop.
