Portland-based label Durable Oxide releases its debut record, DOX-001 — the third full-length album by duo Latest Fad, "Radio Free Money," issued on CD in a four-panel digipack featuring artwork created by the band themselves. The duo, Paul Uusitalo and Dan Wilk, are based in Portland and Seattle and spent decades building professional video software together before turning to electronic music in earnest as Latest Fad in 2019. They had previously released two albums on their own label, Fading Systems, but this new record shows a far more controlled and focused version of their signature sinister sound. Across nine tracks, banks of vintage synthesizers, modern workstations, analog effects, and stringed instruments combine into an electroacoustic pastiche of submerged melodies, hidden rhythms, drops that never arrive, and atmospheres that are both mournful and hopeful. Conceptually, the album plays on the idea of 120 years of Earth's electromagnetic transmissions drifting into space, as if the universe is finally answering back to a planet obsessed with money and consumption. The sound hovers between claustrophobic tightness and infinite expanse, laced with dark humor as it observes the absurd distractions people use to escape daily cruelty. Key tracks include the opener "30 Action Station Ideas To Elevate Your Dining Experience," the harsh "Business Hugs II" and "Aberrant Tool & Die," the dub-inflected hit singles "Ghost Law" and "Live Laugh Loop," and the nine-minute title track — a haunting, immersive soundscape typical of the band's style.
