Kaye Bohler’s songwriting on Handle the Curves lyrically takes you on a journey from introspection to fun loving, blatant sexual "double entendre." Musically Kaye has written straight down the heart of Soul and Blues, and spared nothing in bringing out the very best in these 10 original compositions. Inspired by that depth of soul in the Kaye Bohler voice, legendary guitarist and multi-platinum, Grammy award winning producer, Pete Anderson, envisioned and ran these tunes through the Stax/Volt style recording and production mill, complete with big Memphis style horn arrangements, written by the great tonight show trumpeter Lee Thornburg, on every single track.
From the moment the first horn parts hit on “Digging On My Man” your ear is transported to an era of Memphis horns and funky raw vocal interpretations, reminiscent of the late Sixties early Seventies Stax /Volt recordings. Kaye Bohler brilliantly swings the lyrics on The Way I Do Business, simultaneously challenging ones ethics in life. Bubble Gum is anything but bubble gum in the content of this tune. With this beautifully polished arrangement, Kaye humbly reveals the hits life has given and the inability to retain the joyful innocence of youth. The Title Track, Handle the Curves is a true classic slow blues. It’s a smoky and sexual mix with masterfully written haunting horn arrangements by Lee Thornburg, and an emotive guitar solo by Kelly Back. Backbone lyrically explores what it really takes to make it through life, and the guitar picking on this tune by Pete Anderson leaves the listener speechless. Party Time is a fun, rocking and driving Blues where Pete again offers searing guitar work. Slayed delivers a sweet Al Green style love song and It’s the Blues brings the classic blues lover out in every listener. The arrangement of Family is Found feels like a hit from the very beginning. It lyrically challenges the institution of family simultaneously celebrating friends as the real family we all have. No song brings the soul out in Kaye Bohler’s voice more than Don’t Take My Hope Away. The fight for a 30 year music career is really revealed in this story that Kaye Bohler shares with this song and every tune on this album.
Numerous fans have coined the term the “white Tina Turner,” when describing a live Kaye Bohler performance. Kaye has worked tirelessly for over 30 years to become the most authentic, athletic and powerful performer she can. Now, with this fifth CD release, that depth of soul is matched with this brilliant CD, Handle the Curves.
