This is the first official CD of The Night Train, a blues band of northern Italy. It shows all the love and dedication of the group for the Blues and all the positive excitement of their first work. The music - recorded live on analog tape to capture "that vintage sound" - is played on acoustic instruments with the intent to blend the different musical backgrounds of the band members.
In recent years, the musical project of the Night Train favors the performance with acoustic instruments: harmonica, acoustic guitars, dobro, bass, drums played mostly with brushes. Our work "Blues for Breakfast" reflects this "unplugged" approach and was recorded live on analog tape to capture the natural sound and a vintage feel.
The album features original songs and reinterpretations of some classics of Afro-American music.
"Early in the morning", is the opening of the CD and it is a 1947 song of Louis Jordan and one of the first examples of Rhumba Blues. We wanted to maintain the Latin feel, trying to emphasize the goliardic spirit that characterized much of the author's work.
"Blues for breakfast", the song that gives the title to the album, is an original shuffle and tells of the difficulty of getting up early in the morning after spending the night around playing.
With "I ain't not got you", we wanted to pay a tribute to both the author Jimmy Reed and the Blues Brothers, whom should be ascribed the merit of the widespread of the Blues. For this, we have recovered part of their arrangement.
"Hallelujah I love her so" is one of the major R'n'B hits of Ray Charles. We reinterpreted the song in a swing style, slowing the beat.
"Mississippi bound", the second original of album, is a funk piece and has a programmatic title: it speaks of the necessity of understanding deeply the roots of the genre to play the Blues.
"Kidney Stew" is an amusing piece of the saxophonist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, which is revisited rarely. The theme is exposed by the harmonica - here amplified in a Chicago-like style - and the pace is swinging.
With "How Long Blues", a song of the late twenties by Leroy Carr, we wanted to take a plunge in the more traditional blues. For this reason we used the washboard and a dobro guitar played with the slide.
Funky style of New Orleans is the basis of another original "If you don't love me," that employs for the lyrics, a classic theme of the Blues: the end of a love story.
"Nobody knows you (when you're down and out)" is a ballad written in the late twenties for the great Bessie Smith, Empress of the Blues, which boasts countless covers including a beautiful Unplugged version by Eric Clapton, by which we have inevitably been inspired.
A train shuffle could not be missing, if only for affinity. The classic Junior Parker's "Mystery Train" is here proposed with a wink to rock'n'roll.
The album closes with and instrumental piece, "Nice and Easy", a jazzy Blues composed as a tribute to the great Charlie Christian and Kenny Burrell, guitarists both placed within the jazz world but characterized by a deep Blues feel. This piece avails itself of the collaboration of the talented jazz musician Francesca Bertazzo Hart, with interventions of scat singing and guitar solo.
