His contribution to this genre was validated in 2013 when he was inducted as one of the Living Legends of Los Angeles by the Jazzabration Foundation. Vocalist, saxophonist and songwriter/arranger, bluesman Bobby Hurricane Spencer has a musical past that has spanned over 45 years. Spencer considers Oakland his hometown where he cut his teeth in the Chitlin’ Circuit of the Bay Area including San Francisco, Russell City, Richmond, Alameda, and others. This included playing in such legendary clubs as Al's House of Smiles, the Showcase, the Sportsman, Ester's Orbit Room and the Continental Club. Later came the Shalamar and Troyce Key's famous Eli's Mile High Club. If you were lucky enough to have heard the soul pumping from these clubs then you know the Hurricane, because he was anchored dead center in the horn section of bands such as Johnny Tolbert and De Thangs and Marvin Holmes and the Uptights -- playing behind such legends as Etta James, the Whispers, Carla Thomas, Lowell Fulsom, and ZZ Hill and opening for musicians like Bobby Blue Bland, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and Smokey Robinson. Spencer played with Rodger Collins at the first Rock Festival ever (according to Rolling Stone Magazine) at Mount Tamalpais. His trademark sound can be found on records by Timex Social Club, Sonny Rhodes, JJ Bad Boy Jones, Jimmy McCracklin, just to name a few. As a session player in Oakland, he recorded for Fantasy Records’ Ray Shanklin with Little Johnny Taylor, Roger Collins and more. His original music appears on the Grammy nominated Force of Nature album by Koko Taylor. Most recently in the Fall of 2013 he was inducted into the Living Legends Foundation which includes such legendary musicians as Les McCann, Phil Upchurch, Brenda Lee Eager, HB Barnum, and Al Williams.
