The sound of Flatt and Scruggs is to the American musical scene what flamenco music is to the plains of southern Spain and what the gypsy violin is to the several nationalities who live beside the winding Danube. The sound of Flatt and Scruggs is the classic form of some of America's oldest folk music.
In performance, one will hear Flatt and Scruggs renditions of contemporary songs, but the bulk of their repertoire is made up of the old melody lines - the melody lines that have been sung and played in our Eastern mountains since the Anglo settlers first came and cleared the land and built the towns and culture that survive today.
The sound of Flatt and Scruggs is often called Bluegrass music, which, indeed, it is. But Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs have taken Bluegrass music several steps forward. The musical form we know as Bluegrass has been played for many years, but not precisely in the manner of the Flatt and Scruggs sound. Flatt and Scruggs have provided the “Sound" with a distinctive precision that produces an aura of relaxed perfection. They share an empathy that indicates they read each other's musical minds.
The artistry of Earl Scruggs and his distinctive “three-finger" banjo style is the catalyst for the group. The excitement of his performance has given new life to “the only musical instrument indigenous to this country.” The dexterity of his style, the fluidity of his everchanging chord pattern, has provided his banjo playing with some of the distinction that Segovia has given the guitar.
The sound of Flatt and Scruggs has taken this musical form from the hills of North Carolina and Nashville's Grand Ole Opry to the great music halls of the cities across the land. There is new interest, not only in this country, but in Western Europe, the United Kingdom and Australia. This interest can be attributed to the sound you will hear in this collection of contemporary and traditional songs.
The sound of Flatt and Scruggs is the sound of American folk music in its finest classical form.
