“The Countriest Singer in Nashville”
It was Jone Morgan’s first visit to Nashville. A long way from the posh clubs which you might call her “natural performing habitat, ” the pretty singer was in town to cut her first country-music album.
“I think we were all a little nervous at the start,” confessed 25-year-old producer Ronny Light. “I admit I Was apprehensive about how she would feel about working with a young producer.”
Whatever, everybody involved soon relaxed and, as is generally the case with Nashville sessions, by the time three days of recording were completed, sophisticated Jane Morgan was “the countriest singer in Nashville.”
I was no put-on or put-down: Buoyant Jane, with the legitimate, throaty voice, seemed not only to like country music but to be a country-music fan. She was a pro all the way and impressed everybody with her cooperation and responsiveness.
“She was a joy and all of us enjoyed working with her,” complimented a veteran musician.
“She sincerely wants to be a success in this field,” added another.
Nashville is known for its “head arrangements” (improvised on the scene) and this also was a change for Jane. The only other time she had recorded without arrangements prepared in advance was on Fascination, a single which sold a million in 1957 and has become her tuneful trademark.
What developed in Nashville is a fusion of her fine, trained voice, the musical savvy producers Ronny Light and Cher Atkins and the professional background support of “Nashville sound” musicians and vocalists, enhanced the steel guitar magic of Jimmy Day, Pate Drake and Lloyd Green.
Jane Morgan Nashville includes such country standards as Heartaches by the Number, Once a Day, Make the World go Away, Don’t Touch Me, That’s a No No (you’ll big her up-tempo treatment) and Evil on Your Mind, plus some relatively new material: The First Day, A Girl Named Johnny Cash, and Charley (written by Britisher Tom Spingefield, Dusty’s Brother), and concludes with the hymn Where No One Stands Alone.
