Rizan Said - Ma Waraa Al-Shaabi (2026) [Hi-Res]

Rizan Said - Ma Waraa Al-Shaabi (2026) [Hi-Res]

BAND/ARTIST: Rizan Said

Rizan Said is a Syrian keyboardist and synthesist from the Jazeera, a borderland in northeastern Syria where Kurdish, Arab, Syriac and Armenian communities have lived side by side for centuries. The region has a distinctive sonic tradition: hand drums, reed flutes, multi-day weddings, and dabke, which existed long before electro and disco. Rizan grew up a prodigy on percussion and reed instruments and became a key figure in the shift to electronic keyboards.

Over three decades — from the cassette circuit of Hassake, Deir Ez Zor and Qamishli to festivals such as Le Guess Who and Iceland Airwaves — he learned to bend factory presets on Korg keyboards so they imitate the zurna, saz, tanbura and buzuq; an entire traditional ensemble sounds from his hands moving at lightning speed. This sound carried the voice of Omar Souleyman beyond the region, and for nearly two decades Said built it at weddings and concerts.

In May 2026, at the Sundlaugin studio in Iceland, he recorded his third solo album, Ma Waraa Al-Shaabi (after King of Keyboard, Annihaya, 2015, and Saz Û Dilan, Akuphone, 2019): seven pieces across four sides of vinyl, pushing “cosmic” electronic dabke forward. It was produced by Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Panos Cosmatos), co-produced by Mark Gergis (Syrian Cassette Archives, Sublime Frequencies), and engineered, with additional production, by Úlfur Hansson; Charmaine Lee also took part. The sessions were a reunion: in 2011 Dunn and Gergis worked with Said and Souleyman on The Crystalline Series — three versions of Björk’s “Crystalline,” “Tesla” and “Mawal” (around Biophilia), built on Said’s keyboards. Fifteen years later the same circle reconvened, this time with Said at its center. In his words, the album is not a new beginning but a continuation of a long journey: the musicians did not try to recreate the past but let the music lead, and the Icelandic studio gave them room to experiment and listen closely.
