The Brooklyn-based group Alsarah & the Nubatones, founded by singer Alsarah, percussionist Rami El-Aasser, oud player Haig Manoukian, and bassist Mawuena Kodjovi, crafts a distinct East-African retro-pop sound. The group's debut album, "Silt / طمي," released in 2014 on Wonderwheel Recordings, gained international acclaim, while the subsequent remix collection "Silt Remixed"—featuring contributions from Nickodemus and Chancha Via Circuito—was recognized by FACT Magazine as one of the year's best remix projects. Following the passing of Haig Manoukian, the band integrated new members: oudist Brandon Terzic and vocalist Nahid. Touring prestigious international festivals, the band demonstrates the universal appeal of World Music and Afropop, successfully crossing cultural and linguistic boundaries.
