French producer Malibu has released her debut album, Vanities—a collection of ambient tracks recorded between Stockholm and Los Angeles. The album captures the contradictions of urban life, combining textured synth sounds with field recordings of city noise. Malibu sets melodic vocal lines against a cold, cinematic production that evokes an uninhabited California noir. In this work, the artist explores themes of alienation and devotion while also capturing personal experiences from the pandemic. Unlike her previous EP, Vanities features a more spacious sound that brings her voice to the forefront of the tracks. On songs such as “Lactonic Crush” and the title track, she strikes a delicate balance between noise and dreamlike serenity. The album closes with “Watching People Die,” which offers solace and a sense of closure in the face of mortality. These tracks become a kind of refuge for listeners, letting them disconnect from a noisy, overstimulating world.
