Montreal artist N NAO releases Nouveau Langage, a musical work built as a science-fiction narrative touching on metaphysics, astronomy, ecology, love, and survival. Outwardly light and airy, the music conceals a fiery, almost radical energy: acoustic sounds are transformed into electronic ones and back again, and the songs undergo genuine metamorphosis as they unfold.
Where her previous album explored prehistory and the origins of life on Earth, this new record turns to the many forms life can take — terrestrial and extraterrestrial, natural and supernatural. Her voice becomes an instrument that illuminates hidden connections between beings: an echo, a fire, love. She describes the record herself as "an album about desire, ecology and stars" — a sensory, physical experience where lyrics and sound operate on the level of feeling.
The album's conceptual foundation is musica universalis — the ancient belief that the Universe is musically organized and held together by a force of attraction binding both humans and celestial bodies. Around this idea, N NAO assembled a true constellation of collaborators: producer Jean-Bruno Pinard (known for his work with Patche, Les Louanges, and Laurence-Anne), along with musicians Charles Marsolais-Ricard, Samuel Gougoux, Coralie Gauthier, Simone Provencher, and Jon Nellen. Mastering was handled by Heba Kadry, who has worked with Björk, Slowdive, and Tirzah, while the artwork was created by Charline Dally and Juliette Dupont Duchesne.
Released January 31, 2025 on Mothland, the album merges sacred chants with minimalistic lyrics and intricate electronic textures born "inside machines." It's recommended listening for fans of Björk, Jenny Hval, and Cocteau Twins.
