In 1983, Myrrh released Come Together, an album by Bobby Jones And New Life, an ensemble that fused joyful gospel messages with soul grooves and sang not only for church congregations but for a wider audience. Its eight tracks, including I Can’t Live Without His Love, I’m So Glad I’m Standing Here Today and I Am Somebody, are built around themes of hope and determination: warm vocals are supported by strings (arranged by Lari Goss) and horns (Lloyd Barry, with the Nashville Horn Works section), while Linn Drums and keyboards add contemporary touches and a smooth funk/soul feel.
The album was recorded in Nashville at Woodland Studios and mastered at Mastermix. Guitarists Emory Gordy Jr. and Larry Byrom and backing vocalists Bonnie D. Hatcher and Emily Harris took part in the sessions; Rick McCollister played percussion and also handled engineering and mixing. The result pairs Nashville studio polish with organic heartfelt soulfulness, and among early-1980s gospel-soul releases, Come Together stands out for its balance of spiritual depth and modern sound — warm production, strong performances and rich arrangements that collectors of vinyl especially prize.
