Roy Ayers, the vibraphonist, jazz-funk pioneer and widely acknowledged godfather of neo-soul, died on March 4, 2025, in New York City at the age of 84. His legacy lives on through reissues and reworks: BBE Music is releasing the second volume of official reworks by Berlin DJ Delfonic (Markus Lindner), made up of six dancefloor-ready reimaginings.
The series began by chance: Delfonic sent BBE founder Pete Adarkwah a spontaneous edit, and listener demand for a vinyl pressing turned it into a full release. Volume 1 sold out quickly among collectors, so expectations for Volume 2 are high.
The material is drawn from little-known Ayers sessions recorded between 1976 and 1981 and collected on the Virgin Ubiquity compilations: rare, unreleased recordings that collectors have chased for years. BBE has held the license to them since 2004, and the new series extends that long partnership. The label, now celebrating its 30th anniversary, is trusted by buyers for the quality of its physical soul-jazz releases.
Delfonic is a Berlin native and professional DJ since 2004, whose style is rooted in hip-hop but spans many genres. Ayers himself got his first vibraphone mallets at five after seeing Lionel Hampton’s band, and signed his first recording contract in 1963. His music has been sampled for decades by Mary J. Blige, A Tribe Called Quest, Common and Kanye West, making him one of the most sampled figures in soul-jazz history.
