Eric Angelo Bessel, an American-German composer, producer and visual artist based in Portland, Oregon, has released Illusion of an Inland Ocean, his most expansive and mysterious work to date, extending the worlds of his earlier albums Visitation (2023) and Mirror at Night (2025). He wrote, recorded, mixed and produced all eighteen compositions himself, and also created the artwork and visual identity of the release. His recent work has drawn international press attention and established him as a distinctive voice at the intersection of ambient, experimental and electroacoustic music.
The album feels like the gradual discovery of a place that has always existed nearby but remained unrecognized. It is assembled from familiar roads, forgotten infrastructure, weathered shorelines, shifting light and the quiet persistence of the natural world. There is no plot: the listener wanders through the record, notices recurring landmarks and finds hidden connections beneath the ordinary. The music was composed in the early morning and refined late at night, where dreams, memory and observation meet. Its sound rests on Mellotrons, guitars and richly textured analog processing. Compositions evolve through layering and barely perceptible transformation, with melodies and textures emerging at the unhurried pace of weather. The album does not move toward a destination and asks for sustained attention, rewarding each return with new details. Kindred artists: The Caretaker, William Basinski, Loscil, Stars of the Lid, Faten Kanaan.
