Japanese throat singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Posuposu Otani releases the LP “ShuHaRi” on 33-33, his second album after his self-titled debut. His music is built on open-tuned guitar, the Japanese jaw harp Kohkin, and throat singing, with an emphasis on rhythmic shifts, overtones, and timbre. Simple song structures are expanded through voice, string sounds, and resonances, and the direct connection between voice, instrument, and space takes the place of electronic production.
The title borrows the ancient Japanese concept of “Shu-Ha-Ri”: three stages of mastery — following the rules, breaking them, and moving beyond them. The music is organized by the same principle: traditional forms and personal modes of expression do not oppose each other but flow into a continuous process of transformation. Between mountain life and inner landscapes, between folk song and altered perception, a restrained, almost otherworldly atmosphere emerges. The lyrics touch on humanity’s relationship with nature, ecological unease, and the strange certainties of modern everyday life.
