Mountain-dwelling Japanese throat singer and multi-instrumentalist Posuposu Otani gets his first physical release, demonstrating just why he's so widely respected on the Tokyo underground.
You've most likely not heard anything like this before. Otani's first "proper" album (there are a few scattered releases on Bandcamp, if you fancy digging) was passed on to 33-33 by FujIIIIIIIIIIIIta, and it's a revelation. Break it down a little, and the self-titled album is a set of low-slung, hallucinogenic psych-folk songs, but Otani's freeform fusion of open-tuned guitar, throat singing and khokin, or Jew's Harp, muddies the water.
He's been performing on the Tokyo circuit since 2006, where he's built up a solid reputation, and his music's informed by his life of traveling and immersion in mountain life in Kanagawa. Singing about mushrooms and the open air, he sounds as if he's trying to make pop and veering off course every time. Just peep 'About Freedom', where emo-tinted strums are interrupted by warbling khokin sounds, or 'before the iron it's get cold', that opens with hoarse vocal vibrations and mutates into Otani's own DIY blues. His voice is so unique, it's almost disconcerting, but give it a few minutes and you'll be hypnotised.
