In 2006, between the Super Furry Animals albums Love Kraft (2005) and Hey Venus!, the sole album by Acid Casuals, Omni, was released. Twenty years later, it is being issued on vinyl for the first time, remastered and aimed at collectors.
Acid Casuals is a loose Cardiff community of musicians, artists and friends that has existed since 1994. At its original core were Super Furry Animals keyboardist Cian Ciarán, former Big Leaves bassist Kev Tame, and musician and actor Llyr Evans. It was never a conventional band: members and guests dipped in and out as time allowed, and its lineup and identity deliberately stayed fluid despite the tours and releases accumulated over the years. It grew out of the same Cardiff scene as Super Furry Animals and has long been regarded as an important but underrated chapter of Welsh music history.
Omni has ten tracks that move freely between electronic abstraction, ambient melody, skewed pop, vocal experimentation and psychedelic songcraft. The adventurous spirit shows even in the titles: If I’m A Selt, You’re A Sunt and 132a Column Road (nods to Richard Burton), Wa Da Da, Kraken, Luciano, and the woozy doo-wop romance of the closer, Bowl Me Over. The reissue is aimed both at listeners coming over from Super Furry Animals and at vinyl completists, for whom the record was a long-missing piece of the puzzle.
