The British band Bird in the Belly, long beloved by critics, is releasing its fourth studio album after a lengthy wait. The music draws on the sound of 1970s British folk-rock: the arrangements are dense, dark and atmospheric, with an eerie edge. Its range is wide, from folk horror songs evoking the atmosphere of The Wicker Man to rousing folk anthems that would not be out of place in the repertoire of The Pogues. The album’s theme is the line between real and imagined folk outsiders: those who are feared and those who live in fear. The band stays true to its signature approach: narrative songs and painstaking research, including obscure songs and overlooked texts. At the centre of the sound is the vocal duo of Laura Ward and Ben Webb: her soft, lovely voice smooths the deliberately jagged edges of his delivery. Critics praise the band for combining musical invention with the exhumation of forgotten heritage (Neil Spencer, The Observer), for dark, ominous arrangements (RnR Magazine), and for sending dark songs straight to the listener’s heart (Jude Rogers, The Guardian).
