The label Shika Shika has released the fifth volume of its charity series “A Guide to the Birdsong”, devoted to endangered birds. While earlier editions focused on regions (South America, Mexico, Central America, Western Africa) and on migration, the new volume takes a different shape: it is a remix album in which tracks built from and inspired by the songs of threatened bird species are reinterpreted by the electronic artists Auntie Flo, Photay, Matias Aguayo, Yosi Horikawa, Tayhana and El Búho.
The record’s sound spans experimental club music, organic electronica, Latin American underground, downtempo, field-recording-led music and global dance music, all sharing one root: the voices and rhythms of the natural world. From the start the project has been built on collaboration with renowned musicians and producers, and its proceeds go to bird protection: across all previous editions it has raised almost $100,000 USD for on-the-ground conservation work. The music serves as a way to tell listeners about the fate of vulnerable species and the state of nature as a whole.
Tracklist:
1. Maracuya - Cuco Pico Gordo (Yosi Horikawa Remix)
2. Les Mamans du Congo - Loango Weaver (Photay Remix)
3. Osei Korankye - Rufous Fishing Owl (Cerrero Remix)
