Drummer and composer Frank Rosaly and multi-instrumentalist Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti have released the EP “O,” a new stage in their multifaceted shared musical journey. The title comes from the Taíno language, in which “o” means “mountain”: the music is partly inspired by the landforms and flora that sustained both musicians’ ancestors, and the project is a focused immersion in the cultural practices of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
The sonic foundation of the record is loose polyrhythm, pulse, trance, and extension over time. The duo builds vast, dark landscapes: sounds without an identifiable source, layers of field recordings and processed noise containing embedded rhythmic matrices, and, of course, drums. The material grows out of improvisation and experimentation, where the musicians’ shared vision and careful guardianship of sound come together. The music feels like a pilgrimage: it makes the elusive tangible and leaves the listener room to be immersed in micro-sonic detail.
Stylistically, traditional forms — Bomba, Plena, Rumba, Batá, Vodou, Cumbia, and Dub — dissolve into new, imagined worlds. Drums and synthesizers recontextualize their elements, joining heritage with experimentation and speculative world-building. For the artists, this musical meditation is a form of protest against hegemonic ascendancy; its spirit aims to foreground what matters most — the people and their cultural heritage.
