Turkish-born composer and songwriter Isik Kural, now based in Glasgow, began on nylon-string guitar as a teenager, writing playful lyrics from stray phrases and snatches of conversation. That curiosity grew into a musical path: he studied music at the University of Miami, then spent years travelling, following rhythms and folk tales from Helsinki to Glasgow and through historic landscapes, drawn especially to ancient, golden-hued old worlds.
Those journeys underpin his new album, Motorcycles and Cherry Wind. Its title and spirit trace back to a 2022 trip to Marrakech, where Kural cared less about documenting facts than about fleeting sensations entangled with sound: the smell of packed earth, the texture of village walls, the light on cherry-red fruit at a roadside stall on an October afternoon. Over the years he has gathered such interior traces of travel — a field recording from an Istanbul “dolmus”, the afterglow of swimming in ancient Lycia, birdsong from Bridge of Allan — and now sorts through this archive unhurriedly, weaving his finds into textured, atmospheric arrangements. Piano, guitar, woodwinds and even traditionally scored sheet music combine to give the music a spiritual, almost transcendental quality. Each song is conceived as an ode to ancestral musicians, whose borrowed melodies, passed through many hands, take on new meaning each time.
Nine musicians from different countries take part: Gabriel Bastos (violin and viola, Brazil), Noelia Diaz (cello, Argentina), Giulia C (flute, Italy), Sasko Temelkoski (bass clarinet, North Macedonia), Teresa Castanon (clarinet, Spain), Hannah Gobbett (clarinet, England), Niki Yaghmaee (violin, Germany), Ezgi Daloglu (flute, Istanbul) and Loris S. Sarid (clarinet, Glasgow). Their cultural and geographic influences converge in Glasgow, where Kural shapes them into a single whole, preserving echoes of obscure traditions in modern studio abstractions. The album is released on October 30, 2026 on vinyl and digital via RVNG Intl.
