Violinist and composer John Matthias teamed up with multi-instrumentalist and The Pogues co-founder Jem Finer to create the album "Almost Starlight," released via the Touch label. The recording also features cellist Jay Auborn. A medieval church was chosen as the recording site, with its unique acoustic environment acting as an active participant in the sacred sound meditations, absorbing and amplifying the string resonances.
The central concept of the project is to reframe electronic music and kosmische musik through an acoustic lens, driven primarily by Finer's hurdy-gurdy and Matthias's violin. Mimicking the interlocking sequencer patterns of the Berlin School and minimalism, the duo merges the aesthetics of early music with the framework of avant-garde electronics. The album weaves together influences ranging from Brian Eno, Arvo Pärt, and Michael Nyman to Alice Coltrane and Cluster, delivering an anachronistic fusion of chamber classical music, ambient, and experimental folk.
