Country music has never been especially popular in Vancouver, yet the Vancouver-based Midnight Rodeo Band, led by guitarist and songwriter Ed Molyski, has become one of Canada’s leading country acts. Its self-titled debut album, released in 1982 on RCA Records, produced four hit singles; the first, “Nashville Just Wrote (Another Cheatin’ Song),” reached #2 for Country Group in the RPM Radio Programmers Music Poll. The band has been nominated for Top Country Vocal Group at the ACME and Juno Awards, and has won Best Country Act at the CARAS-sponsored Tribute to West Coast Music three years running.
The lineup is Molyski, bassist-vocalist Jess Lee, pedal steel player Al Hildebrand and drummer Theo Sysoev. They are currently touring Alberta and Saskatchewan behind their new album MRB 2, which has already yielded the hit singles “Rocky Mountain Opry” and “Slow Lovin’.” The record is mellower and less punchy than the debut. It was produced by Mike Francis, whose credits include the Ronnie Prophet television show, and recorded in Toronto in about 20 hours, after a year spent on demos. It features some of Canada’s finest country sessionmen, including Anne Murray’s drummer Barry Keane and Tommy Hunter band guitarist Bobby Lucer. The first album, by contrast, was made entirely by the band itself with no outside players, so it sounds rawer and edgier, with some string buzz here and there.
MRB 2 contains seven Molyski originals plus covers of Mel Street (“Lovin’ On Borrowed Time”) and Roger Miller (“Husbands and Wives”). Molyski’s chief idol is Willie Nelson: he values musicians who keep their own sound and admires Nelson’s guitar playing, and he also names Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings. Between tours, Molyski and Lee make beer commercials for Labatt’s and play as a duo at Vancouver-area venues such as the Side Track pub in Delta and the Newton Inn lounge, where they once backed Kenny Rogers around the time of his hit “Lucille.” In Molyski’s words, Vancouver is a duo town: a good duo playing middle-of-the-road music with a touch of country can do quite well there.
