Dallas producer Jeff Saenz, founder of Modern Electric Sound Recorders, the studio where Leon Bridges, Paul Cauthen, Joshua Ray Walker, and Vandoliers have recorded, is stepping forward as an artist for the first time under the name Baby Snakes & The Electric Co. His debut album, “Ouroboros,” is out October 23 via Spaceflight Records; the lead single “Dark Horse” is already out with an official visualizer and was premiered by Atwood Magazine. Saenz started out in punk bands, then moved through rock, alt-country, and Americana circles as a player, producer, and collaborator.
“Dark Horse” is an arena rock anthem about resilience that began as a melody hummed into a phone in the shower. It was written, tracked, and overdubbed in three days, keeping the sound of a live studio take with only tambourine and harmonies added. According to Saenz, it is about hitting the gas through tragedy and deciding together with a loved one to move forward.
The album’s title refers to the symbol of a snake eating its own tail, and to 2025, the Year of the Snake, the sign Saenz was born under. “Ouroboros” contains 12 songs, one for each month of the year, sequenced strictly chronologically through emotional highs and lows, dedications to his wife and children, and reflections on mental health and inner peace. Saenz holds that any other order would disgrace the process of that year: the death, rebirth, letting go, holding on, and renewal.
The record carries special weight for him: on June 1, 2021, he survived a near-fatal accident that led to the amputation of both hands. In making “Ouroboros” he set out to prove to himself that music was still possible, learning to sing and play piano with a rubber-tipped stylus. He has also kept up daily rituals such as brushing his own teeth and driving his kids to school, calling it stubbornness, though it looks like strength.
