Argentine Pablo Volt (producing as Pope), who grew up in Mendoza, and Catalan Jordi Gegé (J.G.G.), raised in a suburb of Barcelona, came together in Barcelona over a love of experimental beers and equally experimental studio sessions. Their duo plays dub folktronica: guitar, horns, drums and synths are recorded loosely and left unpolished, drenched in echo and tape saturation. Their 2023 tape “Mordida” spent months on repeat at the office of the German label Pingipung, which is now releasing their debut album “Aquí me quedo.”
The record is built on the meeting of two different childhoods, bridged by a shared Spanish language and mutual curiosity about each other’s memories. In the studio the two improvise, turning personal images into tracks: a ditch from Pablo’s childhood becomes “Zanjón,” a mountain Jordi used to roam becomes “Emisora,” and an ice cream shop, a Sunday market and a football club serve as small doors into a past the other never lived. The title, “I’m staying here,” is also the name of the Barcelona bar where the friends toast after a good session, and it carries the idea that, looking back at the past, they choose the present. The handmade, melodic, smile-unashamed music reflects the spirit in which Pingipung was founded 24 years ago.
