Guitarist, composer and bandleader Tal Sandman releases Hearts Forever on October 23, 2026, the second album from Sandman Project and the first she has composed, arranged and produced entirely herself. The music blends psychedelic groove, Middle Eastern melody, funk, jazz and desert rock, driven by a belief that music can connect people.
The 2024 debut, Where Did You Go?, won international praise and presented Sandman Project as a borderless, brass-heavy, cinematic outfit. The new record is more intimate and self-assured. It was written after Tal moved from Jaffa to Leipzig: not knowing whether she would find the right collaborators, she built a new band through recommendations from fellow musicians. Long-time collaborator Tomer Baruch returned as mixing engineer. After years of doubting whether she was ready to take full creative control, she finally did.
Tal’s approach is not to separate styles but to take inspiration from anywhere and turn it into something new; each song grows from a single melodic idea. She often records the demo almost entirely herself, even singing the trumpet parts, then leaves the band room to shape and expand the pieces. That is how the opener “Katara” came аbout: a hypnotic groove led by classical oud and Middle Eastern rhythm. “Questions Answers” is built on Afrobeat-inspired drumming and a call-and-response between desert-rock guitar and punchy brass, with Tal’s first layered vocals on the album, a keyboard solo inspired by an Arabic wedding and a surf-punk finale. “So Said The Stone” channels the restlessness of Jaffa through 70s funk and Afrobeat, “Abandawe” combines Moroccan guimbri-inspired guitar, Ethiopian melodic ideas and funky brass, and “Kishuf” drifts toward a “desert Woodstock” with a “magic flute” transformed by reverb and delay.
At the centre sits the title track, the most direct and soulful piece in the project’s catalogue: bittersweet, hopeful, innocent without being naïve. It speaks of memory, compassion and connection across every divide. The closing “Feelings Of Hope” answers the anger and violence around Tal: the whole band sings together as a choir before her searching one-take guitar solo, a quiet act of belief. Choosing hate is easy, she says; choosing hope takes more work.
The album is almost entirely instrumental, leaving listeners room to find their own stories, with music not confined to any one language, nationality or identity. The previous record was supported by All About Jazz, DJ Magazine, Bayern Radio, Greedy For Best, Pipelines Magazine, Ban Ban Ton Ton and Laurent Garnier. Kindred artists include Khruangbin, Kutiman, Mulatu Astatke, Tinariwen, Altın Gün and Waaju. The line-up features trumpeter Paule Lüders, keyboardist and trombonist Linus Haagen, bassist Gregor Nicolai, drummer André van der Heide and percussionist Felix Stade, with Tomer Baruch on synth solo and Jakob Günst on trombone.
