Istanbul-based collective BaBa ZuLa celebrates its 30th anniversary with the release of the album XXX. The group's signature musical framework relies on a distinct synthesis of Anatolian folk traditions, traditional saz instrumentation, psychedelic rock, dub, analogue electronics, and ritualistic trance. Over three decades of artistic evolution, the band has collaborated with pioneering experimental figures including Mad Professor, Jaki Liebezeit of Can, members of Faust, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Warren Ellis of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, shaping the landscape of contemporary Anatolian psychedelia.
Clocking in at precisely 30 minutes and 30 seconds, the album operates as both a social and ecological manifesto. The conceptual narrative centers on environmental defense, standing against corporate land exploitation and industrial destruction. The lyrics range from surrealist poetry and local Istanbul vignettes to political satire on privatization. A central focal point of the record is the track "Hak Bitmez Güç Bitee," which incorporates field recordings of 75-year-old Turkish activist Hatice Kocalar protesting environmental displacement. The album's arrangement is further expanded through guest contributions by İklim Tamkan on synthesizer and organ alongside Eylül Güntekin on double bass.
