For Now is an album by an Irish group rooted in traditional music, made up of musicians from County Cork and its surroundings: Davie, Pádraig, Rory and Hugh. It is a record about place, memory, friendship and loss, and its guiding principle was openness to chance. The musicians brought finished compositions into the studio but left room for instinct: arrangements took shape on the mornings of recording, as everyone sat in one room, listened to one another and responded to what was happening. First takes became final takes, and unplanned ideas appeared along the way.
Place is stitched directly into the titles. Sydenham, the first piece written, is named after the street where Davie lives and where the album began to take shape. Caherea Valley is named after Pádraig’s childhood home overlooking the Shannon Estuary, Alderman’s Bath after a spot near Cork City where Rory grew up, and Hugh dedicated Glenveagh to the home of his childhood in Cobh, Co. Cork.
Some pieces are linked. Pádraig composed the instrumental Departure as a sequel to the song Lowlands Low, imagining it as an afterlife for the young man at the centre of that song. Rhiannon Giddens’s banjo gives the piece a deliberately ghostly tone and carries the story beyond the song’s final words. Niamh Regan, who wrote Three Words, guests on it; their shared background in traditional music gave the band an instant understanding with her, and the arrangement came together almost entirely by instinct, largely in first takes.
The most personal moments on the album are also the quietest. What the Silence Holds grew out of a slow air that Pádraig had carried in his head for years. He recorded the concertina alone, thinking of those who have left this world and the silence that remains after them. When the rest of the band added their parts, the session became deeply emotional for everyone.
The musicians also explored rhythm. On Glenveagh, 4/4 and 7/8 exist side by side: the fiddle and concertina move in different rhythmic directions and then find each other again. On the closing piece, For Now, the 9/8 pulse is concealed at first and emerges gradually. That piece gave the album its name: it evokes a ship slowly sailing out into the night toward the horizon, with no knowledge of what lies ahead.
The album does not claim to be a final statement. It is a snapshot of who the musicians are now, the people and places that shaped them, and the music they wanted to make together at this particular moment. What comes next is unknown, but this is where they are. For now.
