“Testing the Waters” is a long-form electroacoustic composition written in Berlin in the spring of 2023 on commission from WDR 3 radio in Cologne. It is built from episodic movements that together form a sonic dérive — a wandering with no predetermined route. Field recordings blend with instrumental and electronic passages, and studio processing turns them into a continually shifting terrain. Water runs through the entire piece: it trickles, flows, resonates and transforms. It is both material and metaphor here — it gave the work its title and shapes its sense of movement, permeability and drift.
