crys cole's new solo album, "Making Conversation," presents three conceptual commissioned pieces that expand her method of working with highly amplified small sounds. The title track is a stereo version of an 8-channel installation that recreates the nocturnal soundscapes of Bali using instrumental, vocal, and electronic sources, but without using the field recordings themselves. The composition "Valid ForeverrRrrRRrrr… (pt. 1)" is an interpretation of a Beth Anderson score and uses the amplified friction sounds of rolling paper objects and a bowling ball. "Valid ForeverrRrrRRrrr… (pt. 2)" translates this approach into a transcription for a MIDI percussion ensemble. The album showcases an expansion of cole's signature style into new sonic and conceptual territories.
