On the album Mirror Eye, Psychic Ills deepen the drones that fueled their breakthrough on the previous record, Dins. The long, stretched-out sonic spaces are now the heart of the music rather than a backdrop. A significant portion of the material was improvised in the studio, which is why the playing and the flow between songs feel so organic. The record is noticeably more restrained than before: the dense, suffocating rock has given way to less obvious ways of exploring the band’s tribal, psychedelic leanings.
That does not make the album timid. It opens with one of the band’s longest tracks, the ten-minute-plus “Mantis”, which layers hand drums, sitar-like guitars, phased whispers, and chittering, insect-like electronics. For all its length and intensity, the music never feels oppressive or boring. The other large-scale pieces are just as expansive yet open: “I Take You as My Wife Again” drifts from dead-calm passages to buzzing swarms of synths and guitar. Its electronics are especially expressive, sometimes mimicking acoustic instruments and sometimes reveling in harsh, unapologetically synthetic sounds.
Elizabeth Hart’s bass is a key source of the album’s hypnotic pull, whether in the slowly stirring line of “Eyes Closed” or the busier rhythm of the sinuously catchy “Fingernail Tea”. That song and “Meta” have just enough structure to feel like pop songs next to the album’s other excursions. They also come closest to the blend of epic rock, Eastern drones, and electronic atmospheres that defined Dins. That magic may be slightly diminished here, but the album’s feverish, dream-like intensity is compelling in its own right and feels as subtle and natural as a shadow or a reflection.
